Inception

Christopher Nolan’s Inception imagines a technology that allows people to enter and manipulate the dreams of others. Within those dreams, another dream can be created, and another within that each level capable of feeling completely real to the person experiencing it. Time also changes between levels, meaning a short period in one reality can represent years somewhere deeper. The deeper the characters travel, the more difficult it becomes to determine which level represents the original world.

Spoiler alert: the film’s famous ending deliberately refuses to tell us whether its protagonist, Cobb, has actually returned to reality. He spins a top used to help distinguish dreams from the waking world, but walks away before seeing whether it falls. The film cuts to black while it is still spinning, leaving us to question whether Cobb has reached his “base reality” or merely awakened into another layer. Nolan has confirmed that this ambiguity was intentional and central to the film.

This makes Inception particularly interesting through the lens of the simulation hypothesis. If humanity eventually develops immersive digital environments sophisticated enough to become difficult to distinguish from ordinary experience, we may voluntarily begin spending increasing portions of our lives inside constructed realities. A future resembling Ready Player One is still speculative, and a ten-year timeline can’t responsibly be predicted, but the direction of development is recognizable: virtual reality, artificial intelligence and increasingly convincing computer-generated worlds are already advancing. Combined with climate pressures, war, inequality and other disruptions to physical life, increasingly immersive digital environments could become more than entertainment—they could become places where people work, socialize, create and spend significant portions of their lives.

And that produces the Inception question. If we become capable of constructing convincing realities ourselves, how can we know we’re the first civilization to reach that point? If simulated civilizations eventually create simulations of their own, reality could theoretically become nested: a constructed world producing another constructed world, which eventually produces another. Instead of asking only whether we’re simulated, Inception encourages a stranger question: How many levels deep are we—and if we began climbing back through them, how would we ever know when we’d finally reached base reality?
